Every year on 6 August, the Church celebrates the Feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord, commemorating the moment when Christ revealed His divine glory to Peter, James, and John on Mount Tabor. It is a feast of light, hope, and the promise of eternal life. Providentially, it is also the day on which St Dominic of Caleruega, founder of the Order of Preachers, completed his earthly pilgrimage and entered into the glory of heaven.
On 6 August 1221, in the city of Bologna, St Dominic peacefully surrendered his soul to God after a life spent tirelessly preaching the Gospel, defending the truth, and forming generations of friars dedicated to proclaiming Christ. Although weakened by illness, Dominic remained filled with faith and hope until the very end.
Among his final words are those that have continued to inspire Dominicans and the wider Church throughout the centuries. Addressing his brothers, he assured them: "Do not weep, for I shall be more useful to you after my death, and I shall help you more effectively than during my life." These words reveal Dominic's profound confidence in the communion of saints and in the enduring mission entrusted to him by God. His death was not the end of his work but the beginning of a new way of accompanying the Order of Preachers through his heavenly intercession.
The coincidence of St Dominic's death with the Feast of the Transfiguration is deeply meaningful. The Transfiguration reveals Christ's divine splendour before His Passion, reminding the disciples that suffering ultimately leads to glory. Likewise, Dominic's death on this feast speaks of a life transformed by grace and fulfilled in the vision of God. Having spent his earthly life leading others towards Christ, he entered on that very day into the fullness of the light he had so faithfully preached.
While the liturgical celebration of St Dominic is observed on 8th August in the Roman Calendar, his passing on the Feast of the Transfiguration remains a powerful reminder that the vocation of every Christian is to be transformed into the likeness of Christ and to share in His eternal glory.
