This evening, a dedicated group of volunteers gathered at the Church of the Annunciation & St. Dominic in Vittoriosa (Birgu) to carry out the installation of the magnificent tużell, the grand Baroque canopy that adorns the high altar exclusively for the feast.
Every year, this impressive canopy replaces the one used throughout the rest of the year, transforming the sanctuary into a fitting setting for the solemn liturgical celebrations in honour of St. Dominic. Its rich Baroque design enhances the beauty of the church and creates an atmosphere of dignity and splendour that has become synonymous with the feast.
The canopy is the work of the renowned Vittoriosa artist Giuseppe Decelis, who enjoyed a close relationship with the Dominican community in Birgu. His artistic talent is beautifully reflected in this remarkable masterpiece, which continues to be admired by all those who visit the church during the feast.
Beyond its artistic value, the canopy also carries significant historical importance. It miraculously survived the devastation of the Second World War. Following the bombing of the church on 19 January 1941, the canopy was transferred for safekeeping to the Dominican Priory in Rabat, ensuring its preservation during those difficult years. Thanks to this foresight, today we are still privileged to admire this unique artefact, which remains an integral part of the feast's rich heritage.
As it once again takes its place above the high altar, the tużell stands as a testament to the artistic legacy, history and devotion that continue to define the Feast of St. Dominic in Birgu.
