As preparations for the Feast of St. Dominic continue to gather momentum, Birgu is once again preparing to showcase one of its most admired traditions: its magnificent Baroque street decorations. Renowned for their artistic beauty and craftsmanship, the decorations that adorn the streets during the feast have become a hallmark of the celebration, attracting visitors from across Malta and beyond.
Behind this spectacular display lie months of dedicated work carried out by a committed team of volunteers. While many associate feast preparations with the summer months, work on new decorations begins much earlier. Throughout the winter, volunteers dedicate countless hours to designing, restoring, carving, painting, sewing, and assembling new projects, ensuring that the streets of Birgu continue to reflect the splendour and prestige of the feast.
Every decorative element is a true work of art, created with passion, patience, and meticulous attention to detail. The continued investment in new decorations reflects the determination of the St. Dominic's feast commitee to preserve and enrich a tradition that has been passed down through generations.
This year is no exception. Visitors will have the opportunity to admire a number of newly completed works, including elegant banners, finely crafted wooden pedestals, and several other decorative artefacts that will further embellish the streets of Birgu during the festivities.
The official inauguration of this year's new decorations will take place on Sunday, 23 August, following one of the feast's most anticipated moments. After the traditional ceremony during which the revered statue of St. Dominic is solemnly taken out of its niche at 11:00 a.m., the inauguration will be held in Main Gate Street, Birgu, where the newly completed works will be presented to the public for the first time.
The occasion offers an opportunity not only to appreciate the artistic value of the new decorations but also to recognise the dedication of the volunteers whose commitment throughout the year makes these achievements possible. Their selfless work ensures that the Feast of St. Dominic remains one of Malta's finest examples of Baroque street decoration, continuing to uphold Birgu's reputation as a benchmark for beauty, tradition, and craftsmanship.
