The Dominican Community in Vittoriosa has this year undertaken an important project of restoration and refurbishment at the Dominican Priory, breathing new life into one of the most peaceful and significant spaces within the historic building: its cloister.
At the heart of the priory, the cloister has traditionally served as a place of prayer, reflection and meditation for the Dominican friars. Surrounded by the atmosphere of the inner garden, the cloister provides a quiet space where the community can walk, pray and find moments of contemplation away from the activity of everyday life.
Recognising the importance of this space, the Dominican Community invested in a comprehensive restoration project aimed at preserving its character while giving it a renewed and welcoming appearance.
The restoration included all the arches and columns of the cloister, which were carefully restored and repainted. Particular attention was also given to the marble flooring, which was polished to restore its original beauty and enhance the appearance of the entire walkway.
The inner garden has also benefited from improvements to its lighting. New electrical fittings have been installed around the garden, together with uplighters that highlight the architecture and create a warm and atmospheric setting, particularly in the evening.
The refurbishment was not limited to the cloister itself. The entrance to the priory was also given a fresh new look, providing visitors with a more welcoming introduction to the historic Dominican complex. The renewed entrance complements the restoration of the cloister and contributes to the overall care and presentation of the priory.
Although normally a place of prayer and community life for the Dominican friars, the cloister is also opened to the public on special occasions. Visitors have the opportunity to experience this beautiful space during the Birgu Fest in October and during Holy Week, when the priory hosts its annual exhibition.
The restoration therefore represents more than a simple refurbishment. It is an investment in the preservation of a space that forms an important part of the spiritual and architectural heritage of Vittoriosa. By caring for the cloister and the priory, the Dominican Community is ensuring that this historic environment continues to serve the religious community while remaining accessible to the wider public on important occasions.
