Every year on 2 August, the Church commemorates Blessed Jane of Aza, the devoted mother of St. Dominic of Caleruega, founder of the Order of Preachers, better known as the Dominican Order. Although she is often remembered simply as the mother of a great saint, Blessed Jane played a fundamental role in nurturing the faith that would one day bear fruit throughout the world.
Many people who admire images or statues of St. Dominic often ask the same question: Why is he frequently depicted with a dog carrying a burning torch in its mouth?
The answer lies in a remarkable tradition connected with Blessed Jane of Aza. While she was expecting Dominic, she had a dream in which she saw a dog running across the world with a blazing torch in its mouth. This dream was understood as a sign of her son's future mission: through his preaching, he would set the world ablaze with the light of the Gospel.
The symbolism became a reality. St. Dominic founded the Order of Preachers, whose mission is to proclaim the Word of God through preaching, teaching, study, and witness. Today, Dominican friars, nuns, sisters, and lay members continue this mission across every continent, carrying the light of Christ to people of every nation.
For this reason, whenever we see the dog with the burning torch in paintings, statues, or other depictions of St. Dominic, we are reminded not only of his divine mission but also of the faith and trust of his mother, Blessed Jane of Aza, whose dream foretold the extraordinary vocation of her son.
Blessed Jane's influence extended far beyond that famous dream. She was deeply committed to the Christian upbringing of her children. Recognising Dominic's gifts and the importance of a solid religious education, she entrusted him to his uncle, a priest, in Gumiel de Izán, near Caleruega in Spain. There he received his early education and formation in the Catholic faith, laying the foundations for the life of holiness and preaching that would later inspire countless generations.
As we celebrate the feast of Blessed Jane of Aza on 2 August, we give thanks for the witness of a mother whose faith, prayers, and dedication helped shape one of the Church's greatest preachers. Her life reminds us that the seeds of holiness are often first planted within the family, where faith is lived, nurtured, and lovingly passed on from one generation to the next.
